The secret to habits that last
Are you trying to start a new habit this year? Maybe you want to spend more time outside, eat healthier, spend less time scrolling, or even try cold plunging! Or, maybe you’re training for a backpacking trip! Whatever your goal, it’s important to remember that habits shape our lives.
Every big change starts with a small, consistent action. One tiny habit, done consistently, can lead to significant transformation. But let’s face it—most of us struggle to stick with new habits. It’s common to feel motivated at first, only to lose steam after a few weeks.
So, how can you make habits stick? One powerful way is by noticing the pleasantness of the habit while doing it and afterward. For example, if you want to exercise more, pay attention to the moments you actually enjoy being active. Maybe it’s the feeling of your body moving or the calm satisfaction that follows. Noticing these positive moments reinforces the habit and makes it more likely to stick.
The same principle applies to starting a meditation practice. Many people struggle to build momentum, but looking for small benefits can make all the difference. Maybe you notice a sense of ease during your practice or feel lighter throughout the day. These moments of positivity can help you stay committed and connect the dots between the habit and its rewards. If you're curious about building a meditation habit, my Intro to Meditation course is a great place to start. It’s designed to help you notice the subtle benefits of mindfulness and stay inspired to keep going.
