Decadent Rose Petal Latte
Sweet Medicine of Rose and Remembering Goodness of Life
Roses are not only beautiful to look at, they have a calming affect on the body, mind, and heart. Lately I’ve been playing with rose tea recipes and new infusions. It’s been delightful to experiment in this way. I love working with rose because it reminds me of the sweetness of life, even in difficult moments. The senses come alive when working with rose. The colors are vibrant. Make sure you take in the scent of rose petals as they are steeping—the aroma is gently energizing, heart opening, and uplifting.
The Backstory
I’m currently enrolled in an Herbal Apprenticeship program with Flower Folk Apothecary. As part of an assignment, we were asked to make a tea from a single herb. I felt an intuitive pull to work with red rose petals.
I brewed up a tea, which is very simple. I drank it in the evening and fell asleep so easily and soundly, waking up well-rested and energized in the morning.
I read later in Rosemary Gladstar’s book, Herbal Remedies, rose petals release stress and anxiety. For me the tea seemed to calm my nerves and relax myself from the inside out.
I’ve been playing with rose now, researching and developing tea recipes and such. Here’s a fairly simple and elegant rose latte recipe I learned about in my apprenticeship, tweaked and made it my own. I found it fun to make. Use the senses as you prepare the tea latte, and let yourself delight in the simple pleasure with each sip.
Recipe: Decadent Rose Latte
A simple and decadent treat that reminds me of ordinary beauty, pleasure, and sweetness in life. Play with this, make your own. Share the goodness with friends.
Ingredients:
¾ cup of water
1 tbs of red rose petals (you can buy these as “loose teas” at many food coops, herb shops, or online)
¼ cup of your favorite milk
1 tbs butter or coconut oil
Maple syrup (optional, to taste)
Dash of cardamom
Dash of cinnamon
Directions: Heat water in a saucepan and remove from heat when water reaches a boil. Place rose petals in a cup or French Press. Add water, cover, and steep for 5 minutes. Filter the rose petals so what remains is rose tea. Mix milk, butter, and tea (you may want to wait a little while for the temperature to drop) in blender until mixture becomes frothy. To serve, add maple syrup to taste. Sprinkle with cardamom, cinnamon, and even a few dried rose petals.
When you drink it, use the senses. Notice scents. Colors. Floral. Tastes. Open to experiencing pleasantness, beauty, and sweetness with each sip.
